Brookyln Fare Announced as Western Beef's Replacement
Last modified on October 13th, 2021January 6, 2022 was the last day of business for Western Beef Supermarket at 62nd and West End Avenue. Its replacement will be Brooklyn Fare, a grocery store that specializes in "Fresh, gourmet groceries done in classic New York style."
Last month, Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal expressed concern with Western Beef's closing, stating that "For years, and particularly during the height of the pandemic, residents of the Amsterdam Houses have relied on the proximity and affordability of Western Beef."
One of our readers shared Rosenthal's concern, saying that Western Beef was the only thing left "for low-income people and many elderly people who live on Social Security [and] do not have the necessary resources."
Rosenthal went on to note that it will be at least 6 months before Brooklyn Fare opens as they plan to renovate the space. She's currently setting up a meeting to talk to the Brooklyn Fare team this week, and has said she's asking them to match Western Beef's pricing on all items and to provide grocery delivery online and by phone. "Since we've received such an outpouring of concern from members of the community who worry about where they will shop once WB closes, we thought this would make for a good update and help to allay some of the most significant fears."

We spoke with Brooklyn Fare's owner, Moe Issa, who told us he "feel[s] really good about this location," adding that they're "excited to go in there [and] re-do the whole place" and that the neighborhood will appreciate it.
When asked about what items Issa is especially proud to offer at Brooklyn Fare, he said they "take a lot of pride [in] offering mainstream items and high-end items and everything in between. We have something for everybody while doing the right thing for neighborhood."
Since its opening in 2009, Brooklyn Fare's goal has been to "merge the gourmet with the familiar – providing fresh, delicious groceries and prepared foods at approachable prices, with the perks and services of an old-school neighborhood grocer."
Initially based at 200 Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Fare has expanded to Manhattan with grocery stores in West Village and Hudson Yards. Their Upper West Side location will mark its fourth location.
